Routers are devices that forward data packets between computer networks, effectively routing information from one network to another. Switches, meanwhile, connect devices within the same network, facilitating communication by forwarding data to the intended recipient on the local network. These devices are critical in managing traffic within and between networks, ensuring that information is sent and received accurately and efficiently.

Advancements in computer networking have led to the development of several protocols, which are sets of rules that dictate how data is transmitted over a network. The most common of these is the Internet Protocol (IP), which is used alongside the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) to form the backbone of the internet. Another significant advancement is the development of wireless networking technologies, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which allow devices to connect without physical cables. As we move forward, emerging technologies like 5G and IoT (Internet of Things) are set to revolutionize how devices interact and communicate, further expanding the possibilities of computer networking.
