Biometrics refers to the measurement and statistical analysis of people's unique physical and behavioral characteristics. The technology is primarily used for identification and access control, or for identifying individuals within a group. Behavioral characteristics analyzed in biometrics involve voice recognition, gait analysis, and typing dynamics. Governments worldwide utilize biometric data for enhancing national security, implementing immigration controls, and ensuring the integrity of electoral processes. In healthcare, biometrics can help in patient identification, reducing medical errors and preventing identity fraud. On consumer electronics, biometrics such as fingerprint scanners and facial recognition systems are now commonplace, providing users a seamless and secure way to unlock their devices.

Biometric systems function by first capturing an image or recording of the trait in question, such as a fingerprint or a voice clip. This data is then converted into a digital form and a unique biometric template is created. During subsequent uses, the biometric system captures the trait again and compares it to the stored template. If there is a match, access is granted. The accuracy of biometric systems is measured in terms of false acceptance rate (FAR) and false rejection rate (FRR), balancing between security and convenience. Advanced biometric systems also employ liveness detection mechanisms to thwart spoofing attacks, where fake biometric traits (like masks or fake fingerprints) are used.

Despite the numerous benefits, the use of biometrics raises significant privacy concerns. The storage and usage of biometric data can pose a risk if not managed properly, as it can be susceptible to data breaches and unauthorized surveillance. Legislation and regulatory frameworks, such as the GDPR in Europe, are continuously being developed to address these issues, mandating stringent measures for data protection and giving individuals rights over their personal data. Furthermore, ethical considerations around consent and the potential for misuse need to be vigilantly managed. Biometric systems, therefore, need to balance the dual imperatives of utility and privacy, ensuring that they enhance security without infringing on individual rights.
