The term "autonomic" pertains primarily to the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which is a component of the peripheral nervous system responsible for regulating involuntary physiological processes including heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and digestion. Unlike the somatic nervous system, which oversees voluntary movements and actions, the autonomic nervous system operates subconsciously, handling bodily functions that do not require conscious thought. The enteric system coordinates the complex sequence of muscle contraction (peristalsis), enzyme secretion, and blood flow that is essential for digestion.
